Event: #JoziMeetup From Blog to Business

This is an overdue post:

I’m such a consistent attendee of the Jozimeetups that maybe I should be a speaker at the next one. Of all the Jozimeetups I’ve attended this is the one I looked forward to attending the most and it turned out to be more than what I expected. I got to car pool with Puveshree Moodie from and we arrived rather early.

The venue was Placecol spa in Randburg and it was a very cozy space. Heather and Lauren of SA Mom blogs had a wonderful spread laid out for us.

The first Speaker was Jodene Shaer she is one of the first South African bloggers I ever followed. She is the Author of The Holistic entrepreneur; she shared about her experience of turning her blog in to a book. Turning blogs into books is a growing trend I’ve seen blog/books from Tim Ferris (4 hour work week), Darren Rowse: PROBLOGGER and even locally Diary of a Zulu girl by Michael Nkululeko Maphoto and while my blog won’t be turned into a book (well not my earlier work) it didn’t mean there wasn’t much to be learned from her experience. I was all ears.

Key lessons
Use the medium of blogging for something bigger
Have passion for what you do
Strategy is important
Stand true to your story
Remain authentically true to the story you’re trying to tell
It does matter how much you put in, it doesn’t guarantee what you get out.

The next speaker was Imka Webb who is a social media and Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) expert . SEO is something I’ve been struggling with since switching to WordPress. To be honest I was so frustrated I wanted to shut my blog down but after 7 years of blogging (inconsistently) it didn’t seem like a good idea.

Key lessons
SEO is not impossible (this really changed the way I see things in terms of SEO

Content isn’t just words

Use keywords that your target audience use. (Take time to do some keyword research.

The other speaker was Annatjie van Zyl  from Tall trees a website which creates profiles that help parents figure out what kind of parent they are so they can be better parents.

There were of course giveaways after each speaker and I won a free DIY your SEO workshop with Imka.
