Review: PopUp gym Silverstar

I’ve been so looking forward to attending a Pop up gym session since September last year when I met health and fitness gurus Letshego Zulu and co-founder Khethiwe Mlangeni at the Adidas boosts bloggers day.

Having cancelled the Montecasino edition due to bad weather the previous weekend, I can understand the excitement the ladies had when the weather turned out great, in fact it got hotter by the hour.

In this edition of Pop up gym there was the first ever Pop Up gym for kids with Monika Human. Moms were assured they had their kids in the rights hands with Monika who is a child development specialist and she deals with 850 kids every day. Monika had a full session for the kids which included height/weight measurements, hygiene education, and dance and fitness games. Her own kids were involved in the classes as well.

Workout one with Charlie while I’m not a hip-hop fan I loved the fact that it was fun. Charlie was really having a good time and it made easy to follow along even though the actual moves were somewhat complex. (remember I can’t dance)

Workout two was Vinyasa Yoga with Secret sunrise. I missed the secret sunrise when we got rained out at Fit night out. I was really glad to have the opportunity again. While yoga it still so hard for me, the instructions were easy to follow along and I found myself going further than I have before.

Workout three was African Goombay dance by 33 concepts. Lead by Mpho it is an exercise based on African dance movements. We travelled across the continent going through countries like Botswana and Nigeria.

Then finally we had Q and A with Busi from Lovi Juice and she shared the benefits of juicing and explained the difference between smoothies and juices. There were two flavours to sample and they ran out before I had a chance to sample either one. Guess it shows how good they are.

What I loved

Learnt something new: I am African by birth and by right but I’ve never done an African dance inspired workout. I can’t dance but Mpho’s instructions where really fun to follow. He said something like “offer me something, really touch your bum”

Silent disco where we wore wireless headphones during the workout session. Being an outdoor workout this really came in handy I didn’t have to strain to hear and I didn’t miss anything when I went to the bathroom.

Insta photo booth- You could get your photos printed for free the you posted on instagram. I can’t remember the last time I printed photos. So this was a great moment to share with my sister Stephanie.
Free body assessment- it was wonderful to know that I’ve reduced my body fat percentage, shows I’m on track with my fitness goals.
